Dr. John C. Yarrington
In his work with children, youth, and adults John Yarrington has developed a philosophy of working with volunteer singers in a spirit of community. He believes that the best music is made when the singers are as important as the product.
“My work with singers in church and at HBU has taught me that singing is relational, that singers are important, and that community is built and fostered in the choir,” states Dr. Yarrington. John Yarrington is currently the Director of the Chancel Choir at the First Presbyterian Church of Houston and has retired after 18 years as Professor in Music at the Houston Baptist University where he developed an outstanding program in choral music. Dr. Yarrington has also served McFarlin Methodist Church in Norman, OK; First United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX; and Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in Little Rock, AR. He is an active clinician, composer, and author. “Those of you who know me are aware that humor is an important ingredient of my work,” says Yarrington. “We can try to beat people into submission or we can help them get better while enjoying the process.” As an author, Dr. Yarrington has written Have We Had This Conversation?, Building the Youth Choir, Choir Crack-Ups, Somebody’s Got My Hymnal, and Somebody’s Got My Robe. |
